- Government on Thursday announced a slew of measures, including raids on hoarders, to put a brake on spiralling prices of essential commodities like onions and potatoes in Delhi.
- · The UN has made an appeal for hundreds of millions of dollars to alleviate major humanitarian emergencies in Yemen, where 10.5 million people need food, and in Somalia, where all the indicators point to a repeat of its 2011 famine.
- · The Textiles Ministry will firm up the draft of the National Textiles Policy within the next 15 to 20 days, Textiles Minister Santosh Gangwar said on Friday.key objectives of the new Textiles Policy include developing a vision statement of the textile sector for the next decade to treble market share from the current 4 per cent in the next decade.
- · India conveyed to China that the trade imbalance of around 36 billion USD is "not sustainable", prompting the two sides to decide on an expert-level meeting to address the issue.
- · Capital market regulator SEBI has said companies are barred from acquiring shares from the secondary market under the employee stock option schemes till the new regulations in this regard are notified.
- · The sixth and final round of nuclear negotiations between Iran and the six powers group has begun in Vienna. The deadline for a deal expires on 20th July, although this could be extended if an agreement is not made in time. Iran insists it is enriching uranium to fuel power plants, and wants international sanctions to end. But the West has accused Iran of having military intentions, and wants it to scale back enrichment to ensure the uranium cannot be used in weapons. Both sides are hoping to build on an interim deal agreed in Geneva in November that saw Iran curb enrichment in return for sanctions relief. But progress since the Geneva deal has been slow, with the last round of talks in May proving unfruitful.
- · The government has extended the term of RBI Deputy Governor H R Khan for two years with effect from 4th July, 2014. A statement issued by RBI yesterday said that Mr. Khan has been re-appointed for a further period of two years or until further orders, whichever is earlier.
- H R Khan holds portfolios that include Central Security Cell, Department of External Investments and Operations, Department of Government and Bank Accounts and Department of Payment and Settlement Systems.
- He will continue to look after Foreign Exchange Department, Internal Debt Management Department and Inspection Departments.
- · The Union, State and Union Territory governments today unanimously agreed to work together to provide housing for all by the year 2022. They have also resolved to actively implement the 25-point Urban Reforms Agenda proposed by the Union Minister of Urban Development, Housing & Poverty Alleviation Shri M.Venkaiah Naidu. To this effect, Ministers of Urban Development and Housing of the Union, States and Union Territories have unanimously adopted a three page ‘National Declaration on Urban Governance and Housing For All’ after a daylong deliberations on related issues.
